Great Mosque
Just outside the Arab walls that surround the Baalbeck temple
complex (and which bear witness to the period when it was used as a defensive
fortress) lies one of the only two examples of an Omayaad Mosque. The Omayaads
were the branch of Islam that gave rise to the early expansion of the Muslim
Empire throughout the Middle East. In this picture the remains the eastern
courtyard are evident, as is the series of arches that served as the entrance
to the mosque. At the uppermost left the remains of the one of the minarets
can be seen. Click here for a VR tour of the mosque
